Xantrex Freedom SW: idle use, search mode and cutoff
Include a Freedom SW inverter’s idle use in the battery budget and verify whether search mode can detect the devices you need. Low-voltage cutoff is a configurable inverter setting, not a universal battery-care target. Match the model, revision and coach integration before changing equipment.
Idle power can exceed a small device’s daily use
The August 2019 RevH owner guide gives about 28 W no-load draw and less than 8 W in search mode. At those stated powers for 24 hours, the arithmetic is 672 Wh versus less than 192 Wh. Actual cycling and attached loads change the result.
At an assumed constant 12 V, 672 Wh corresponds to 56 Ah. That is an energy calculation, not a measured battery-discharge test. Compare it with the usable reserve of your bank before leaving the inverter enabled for a low-power device.
Search sensitivity must be below a load it needs to recognize
The guide’s Search Watts default is 50 W, adjustable 25–250 W. A load must exceed the selected threshold for detection. Setting the threshold above a needed small device can prevent it waking the inverter; some electronic supplies can still fail detection even above the stated wattage.
Use the exact operating instructions to assess search mode. Clocks, timers and low-power equipment may need continuous supply instead. Energy savings are not useful when essential equipment fails to start.
| Setting or rating | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Search threshold | Actual required device starts in that mode |
| Low-voltage cutoff | Battery limits and voltage under the intended load |
| Charger profile | Exact chemistry, current and temperature requirements |
| Transfer arrangement | Coach wiring, legs, circuit ratings and controls |
The cutoff default is not permission to discharge every bank to it
The cited guide lists 10.5 V default cutoff for its 12-V models and a ten-second default delay. Match the intended battery and protection system. Do not lower the cutoff solely to keep a heavy load running through a low-battery warning.
Nominal inverter watts alone do not establish an air-conditioner start match. Supply voltage, start duration, other loads and protection matter. An air conditioner’s locked-rotor amps multiplied by voltage is not an automatic real-watt requirement or a measured startup event.
A replacement involves more than another brand’s wattage
The original December 2023 iRV2 post describes a 2016 Newmar London Aire owner seeking a 3012-to-MultiPlusII change after two reported failures and asks about Silverleaf integration. It is not proof that every Freedom SW fails or that the proposed swap is plug-in compatible.
Use the current product resources, installed wiring and qualified installer to resolve transfer paths, communications, charging and cable protection. The ENABLE control is not proof all energy sources are isolated, and internal service requires the manufacturer’s safety procedure.
See battery monitoring before blaming every overnight loss on battery capacity.
