RV road rules: licensing, routes and crossing checks

Check licensing, vehicle dimensions, route restrictions and the rules of each crossing separately before traveling in an RV. These requirements can overlap. A suitable driver license does not establish that a tall or propane-carrying RV may use a particular tunnel or road.

Two permissions can turn on the same length

California DMV identifies a noncommercial Class B with endorsement for a housecar over 40 feet and not over 45 feet. Caltrans separately limits those motorhomes to approved routes, with local-road access governed by the relevant local authority.

Assume a 42-foot single-unit coach: it is 2 feet over the 40-foot reference point. The owner needs to resolve both the correct license authority and route access; satisfying only one does not settle the other. Rental permission and campground booking are additional separate questions.

A valve position is not a route exemption

MDTA prohibits specified bottled-propane loads at the Fort McHenry and Baltimore Harbor tunnels. Turning a cylinder off does not change its size or remove the propane aboard. Plan an authorized alternative before reaching a restricted approach.

Use the propane-route guide for the distinction between carriage, quantity and shutoff conditions. Read the full current rule for the actual installation; do not assume a private-use RV is exempt from every hazardous-material restriction.

Measurements still matter after the paperwork

Record the actual highest travel equipment, full width and combination length under the applicable definition. Dimension checks include access and turning space as well as overhead clearance. A legal size can still fail a particular entrance.

For a licensing question, start with the class and endorsement guide. For uncertain current restrictions, resolve the actual route and equipment with the authority before departure. A navigation app, a general RV exemption or another owner’s trip does not establish permission for this configuration.
