RV types: match the vehicle to the trip

Choose an RV type by how you travel, where it must fit and what vehicle can carry or tow the loaded unit. A motorhome combines transportation and living space; a trailer separates them. Folding campers, truck campers and park models solve different storage or site-use problems.

Which arrangement answers your next question?

RVIA defines the main RV categories as temporary recreational living quarters that are self-powered, carried or towed. The category does not decide your campsite permission, driver license or safe loaded weight.

A compact vehicle can still fail the entrance

Winnebago lists its 2026 Travato at 21 feet long and 9 feet 4 inches high. An assumed garage opening of 8 feet is 16 inches lower than that published height. The Class B label therefore does not establish garage fit; measure the actual vehicle, opening and approach.

Specialized towables need a specific check

A rear garage does not prove a toy hauler can carry your particular machine. Its loaded weight, tie-down arrangement, garage clearance and ramp rating must all fit. An off-road label likewise does not establish permitted access, recovery capability or clearance at every obstacle.

Use motorhomes, travel trailers and fifth wheels, folding and expandable campers, toy haulers, truck campers and vans and park models for those decisions.

If ownership itself is uncertain, compare a motorhome, towable, rental or hotel trip before buying. Include the support vehicle, storage and repair downtime in that choice.
