RV fresh, gray and black tanks: capacity and safe use
Identify the actual fresh-water supply, drain routing and holding capacities in your RV before planning an off-grid stay. The limiting tank depends on your use and plumbing. Keep the black dump valve closed during use, follow the installed dumping procedure and use an approved disposal connection.
Measure the limiting capacity rather than assuming gray fills first
For an assumed 40-US-gallon fresh supply and 10-gallon daily draw, the arithmetic gives four days. A separate assumed 30-gallon gray tank receiving eight gallons daily reaches its nominal capacity in 3.75 days. The earlier limiting capacity wins before reserve is added.
| Resource | Assumed quantity/use | Nominal duration |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh | 40 gal/10 gal per day | 4 days |
| Gray | 30 gal/8 gal per day | 3.75 days |
This is a planning example, not a measurement of your RV. Tank shape, usable capacity, reserve, additional supplies and drains routed to another tank change it. Read the plumbing diagram rather than assuming every sink drains to gray.
Water moved between tanks does not multiply its weight
The USGS water figure is 8.33 lb per US gallon. Forty gallons therefore weigh about 333 lb before the tanks themselves. Water moved from fresh to waste tanks remains aboard; it is not an additional forty gallons unless more water enters the RV.
Distribution can change axle and hitch loads even when total water mass stays similar. Reweigh the actual travel configuration after outside water additions or tank changes. Follow the coach’s travel instructions for tank fill, not an all-RVs empty-tanks rule.
Dumping order and valve position are separate decisions
Thetford says to keep the black valve closed during use; its guidance distinguishes gray-valve operation on a sewer hookup. The Pleasure-Way Ontour manual describes black first, then gray to flush the shared hose. Follow the actual coach and dump-equipment procedure, including any preliminary pump check.
Do not force a blocked valve, leave a tank flush unattended or connect drinking-water equipment to waste service. A gray rinse does not sanitize a sewage hose for potable use. Keep handling equipment separate and use hand hygiene.
Pump cycling can be internal leak-back
The SHURflo 4008 manual identifies valve/diaphragm scale and leak-back as possible causes of cycling with faucets closed or tank filling on city water. The symptom does not prove that water is escaping into a wall.
Stop the supply at a suspected leak and inspect safely accessible areas; qualified service can distinguish internal bypass from a plumbing fault. Use pump troubleshooting and the actual coach instructions for sanitizing, pressure limits and winterization. Never use automotive coolant in the fresh-water system.
