Pop-up, hybrid and A-frame camper comparisons
Choose among a fabric pop-up, a hybrid trailer and a folding A-frame by stored height, setup space, beds and weather handling. Confirm both travel and open dimensions. The terms folding and lightweight do not establish that your garage or tow vehicle is suitable.
One A-frame has two very different heights
Aliner’s current Scout specification lists 15-foot length, 78-inch width, 64-inch closed height and 121-inch open height for the street version. Its off-road open height is 124 inches. The listed dry weight is 1,405 lb, dry hitch weight 130 lb and GVWR 3,000 lb.
| Comparison | Result |
|---|---|
| Street open height minus closed height | 121 − 64 = 57 inches |
| GVWR minus advertised dry weight | 3,000 − 1,405 = 1,595 lb |
| An assumed 72-inch opening minus closed height | 72 − 64 = 8 inches nominal clearance |
The 1,595-lb arithmetic difference is not the measured payload available on a delivered, optioned camper. The 8-inch garage example does not account for slope, door hardware, added roof equipment or measurement error. Check the actual unit and opening.
Separate the three setup arrangements
Try the full setup with the intended users, including bed reach, lifting effort, support placement and safe entry. Check whether bathroom, refrigerator and packed luggage remain accessible during travel. Do not assume all lift mechanisms use the same cable arrangement or service procedure.
Owner weights can differ from brochure expectations
In an Aliner owner discussion, one Family Expedition owner reported an actual-unit sticker of 2,239 lb despite expecting under 2,000 lb from brochure wording. That is a different model and an individual report, not a correction to the current Scout specification. It shows why the actual label and loaded scale weight matter.
Fabric bed ends need the manufacturer’s wet-pack and drying procedure; hard folding walls still need seal, hinge and condensation checks. Ask the seller to demonstrate an intact setup and inspect the corners, lift hardware, mattress surfaces and floor after any water staining.
Compare the actual loaded camper and hitch load with tow-vehicle payload limits. For mechanism service use pop-up care; for a hard body without setup beds, compare teardrop trailers.
