RV propane route restrictions: shutoff is not permission

Turning propane off does not make every tunnel or ferry legal for an RV. A restriction can concern container size, total quantity, installation or carriage itself as well as flames and valve position. Check each planned crossing before departure and take an authorized alternative when the actual setup is prohibited.

Baltimore is a concrete counterexample

MDTA’s current tunnel page prohibits bottled propane exceeding 10 lb per container, with a maximum of ten containers, at Fort McHenry and Baltimore Harbor tunnels. COMAR 11.07.01.04 states the exception using 10 lb gross per approved container and 100 lb gross per vehicle, and requires heating flames extinguished before tunnel approaches.

An assumed ordinary 20-lb propane cylinder is not made eligible by closing its valve. Its nominal propane capacity already exceeds the cited 10-lb gross-container exception before considering the cylinder itself. Do not use a fuel-only amount or a partially empty cylinder to reinterpret a gross-weight limit.

Separate carriage, operating state and refueling

Different restrictions answer different questions
ConditionWhy shutoff alone may be insufficient
Container or quantity restrictionValve position does not change container size or carried material
No-flame requirementTurn off appliance operation under its instructions
Declaration or inspectionA closed valve does not replace required operator checks
Refueling procedureFollow the station and equipment instructions for engines, pilots and appliances

COMAR also contains a fuel-system exception. Its application depends on the actual installation; do not assume it exempts every coach appliance tank or every removable bottle. Resolve uncertainty with MDTA before routing through either tunnel.

Protect food with measured temperature

FDA recommends refrigerator temperature at 40°F or below. Do not promise that an unpowered RV refrigerator stays safe for an entire driving day merely because its door remains closed. Use a thermometer and reliable refrigeration or a suitable cooler, with the food-safety procedure for the actual exposure.

A compressor refrigerator’s electrical operation does not remove propane containers used by other appliances. Plan both the power budget and the carried-gas restrictions instead of assuming one appliance replacement changes route eligibility.

Repeat the check for the actual crossing

A Maryland tunnel summary does not establish the rules for a Virginia crossing, a Port Authority tunnel or a ferry. Read the current operator regulations, advisories and any required declaration procedure. Follow safe appliance shutdown instructions; one cylinder valve does not necessarily disable electrical ignition, automatic mode selection or every energy source.
