RV battery drain: charging paths and monitor readings
For an RV battery that runs down overnight, separate energy use, charging failure and lost battery capacity. Record current and operating time, identify which charging source is active and check the monitor’s settings. A higher voltage alone does not prove a full battery or adequate charging current.
A small standing load can consume a large reserve
An assumed 1-A continuous load uses 24 Ah in 24 hours. At a constant assumed 12 V that is 288 Wh. If your chosen usable allowance is 50 Ah, this one load consumes 48% of that allowance in a day, before lights, heating or refrigeration.
This is a calculation, not a measured parasitic draw for all RVs. Compare your own monitor’s readings with actual equipment states. Do not disconnect required safety alarms in an occupied coach to make the drain disappear.
A monitor’s 100% display can be wrong
Victron’s SmartShunt troubleshooting explains that state of charge is calculated and can drift without synchronization. Capacity, charge efficiency and Peukert settings matter, as do the voltage, tail-current and time conditions used to identify a full charge.
Its example uses a 200-Ah battery and 4% tail current: eight amps, with the specified voltage and three-minute condition. Those are example settings, not a profile to copy to every bank. Current bypassing the shunt also invalidates the energy count.
Cold-charge limits belong to the specific battery
The Victron Lithium Smart instructions allow charging from +5°C to +50°C, not simply whenever the air is above freezing. They call for chargers to stop at the battery limits through the appropriate control arrangement. Other batteries can have different requirements.
A heated battery label does not prove its cells are warm, the heater is powered or charging is currently permitted. Do not bypass temperature protection to force a charge. Use the actual battery-temperature reading and instructions.
Trace the source before buying a DC-DC charger
Shore power, generator-fed conversion, solar and the alternator can use different fuses, controls and wiring. A running engine does not establish current at a trailer bank. Record net battery current under a known load and let qualified service verify the relevant path.
A DC-DC charger must match the alternator’s available output, voltage, wiring and battery profile; it cannot create energy from an inadequate feed. Continue with battery sizing and coach switch functions before replacing parts.
