RV refrigerators: absorption, compressor and replacement fit
Choose an RV refrigerator by its actual energy sources, measured electrical demand and approved installation. Absorption models use heat from their specified source; compressor models use an electrically driven cooling cycle. Check food temperature with an appliance thermometer, not a control-dial position or a general claim that the fridge feels cold.
The supply and installation decide the replacement
| Type | Check before purchase |
|---|---|
| Absorption | Approved energy sources, electrical controls, leveling and outside ventilation |
| 12-volt compressor | Supply voltage, wiring, daily consumption and permitted installation |
| 120-volt compressor or residential | Inverter/supply compatibility, demand, retention and ventilation |
| Portable refrigerator | Power connection, secure storage and actual temperature performance |
A compressor unit is not automatically indifferent to tilt, heat or vibration; follow its own instructions. An absorption model may need electrical controls even while using propane. A larger cabinet does not by itself establish higher daily consumption than a smaller one.
Use measured demand for an off-grid budget
Assume a refrigerator draws 5 A at 12 V while its compressor runs for a total of 12 hours in a day. That is 60 Ah or 720 Wh before other loads and conversion losses. This is an assumed duty-cycle example, not a measured Furrion, Norcold or Dometic performance figure.
Measure the actual appliance over relevant weather and use, including door openings and cooling a load. Nominal battery amp-hours do not all become usable refrigerator energy; include the battery’s permitted operation, reserve and charging in the trip plan.
Temperature evidence comes before food storage
FDA recommends 40°F or below for a refrigerator and 0°F for a freezer. A measured refrigerator temperature of 43°F is 3°F above that guidance. A low control setting, cold freezer or several hours of operation does not establish safe fresh-food storage.
Follow the installed model’s startup and leveling instructions. Do not promise that an unpowered fridge will hold safe food temperatures for an entire driving day. Check route propane restrictions separately from appliance operation.
Fit includes the route through the door
Measure the cabinet opening, depth, door swing and entry path, then verify required clearances and approved ventilation. A type change can require qualified gas-line termination, wiring, retention or vent work. Do not close existing vents or add a fan without the installation requirements.
Use cooling-fault checks for a failure and refrigerator care for service. For a replacement, obtain the complete installed quote and model compatibility before choosing by cubic feet.
