Blue Ridge tunnels and Grand Canyon RV access

For Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels, compare the RV’s measured maximum height with the published road-edge clearance and stay in the lane. For Grand Canyon South Rim, use designated RV parking and check Hermit Road’s seasonal private-vehicle restriction. A campsite reservation does not approve either access route.

Blue Ridge edge and centerline clearances are different

NPS lists 26 tunnels: one in Virginia and 25 in North Carolina. It identifies the minimum height at the road edge and maximum at the centerline, and instructs vehicles to detour when the listed minimum gives insufficient clearance. Crossing the centerline to use the taller arch is dangerous and prohibited.

Big Witch’s edge clearance is 11 ft 7 in, or 139 inches. An assumed measured 12-foot RV is 144 inches, five inches higher than that listed edge figure. The 18-foot centerline figure is not permission to straddle lanes.

These published dimensions do not establish current road opening, construction clearance or sufficient operating margin. Check Parkway closures and the actual detour’s suitability. Do not assume a connecting road accommodates the RV.

South Rim parking is a separate length decision

The Grand Canyon RV page identifies Lots 1, B and D for RV parking, limits Market Plaza day parking to RVs 30 feet or less, and recommends arrival before 9:30 a.m. It describes limited options for RVs and combinations over 22 feet. Parking availability is not guaranteed at those times.

An assumed 31-foot RV exceeds the stated 30-foot Market Plaza limit by one foot. Do not park across ordinary spaces to solve the mismatch. Use a permitted alternative and confirm current access and conditions.

Hermit Road changes by season

NPS’s Hermit Road guidance closes the road to private vehicles March 1–November 30. It describes private vehicles under 22 feet during December–February and a seasonal shuttle in the closure period. Check current exceptions, weather and shuttle operations for the travel date.

Keep overnight camping, daytime parking and road access as three separate checks. A legal day-parking space does not authorize sleeping there or driving a restricted road.
