Alaska, Canada and Mexico RV border planning
For an RV border trip, verify each traveler’s documents, vehicle permission, insurance and the rules for carried goods and pets in both directions. A visit and a permanent import are different processes. Build the return crossing into the plan before departing.
Taking a dog into the U.S. requires more than a generic vaccine reminder
CDC’s dog-entry guidance requires a Dog Import Form receipt for each dog. Its low-risk-country route still requires the dog to appear healthy, have a microchip and be at least six months old. Other requirements depend on where the dog has been during the previous six months.
A five-month-old puppy would be one month below that stated minimum age. Do not assume a Canadian or Mexican border crossing removes the requirement or that vaccination alone establishes entry eligibility. Use CDC’s current route for the particular dog and travel history.
| Item | Verify before travel |
|---|---|
| People | Nationality-specific entry/re-entry documents and any child-consent needs |
| Vehicle | Ownership, rental/lender authorization and temporary-entry process |
| Insurance | Territory, permitted use, liability and assistance arrangements |
| Goods | Food, plants, fuel and other required declarations |
| Pets | Destination rules and the return-country requirements |
A Canadian visitor’s temporary entry has conditions
CBSA’s non-resident memorandum describes personal baggage and conveyances brought for a visit, reported at entry and exported afterward, subject to restrictions. A foreign registration or a permanent-import exemption is not blanket permission for every use or owner.
Mexico needs its own vehicle and route checks
The U.S. State Department’s Mexico guidance says Mexican vehicle insurance is required and describes temporary-import permits beyond the border zone, with specified regional exceptions. Confirm the process for the actual motorhome, trailer and any towed car with the responsible Mexican authority.
For Alaska routes through Canada, check current road conditions and the operating dates of fuel stops and campgrounds. Plan range from verified open services; carrying unspecified extra fuel does not replace safe storage, load and crossing requirements.
