RV insurance claims: cause, evidence and review

For an RV insurance claim, document the damage and its known timing, protect against further loss when safe, notify the insurer and follow its claim instructions. Ask which coverage, exclusion, deductible and endorsement applies. Sudden versus gradual damage alone does not settle every claim.

A roof leak needs evidence of cause and coverage

Progressive’s water-damage explanation distinguishes potentially covered external-water events from wear or deteriorated seals. Its separate roof endorsement explanation shows that optional terms may cover some gradual roof damage that a standard policy would exclude. The issued policy and eligibility control.

Keep photographs, storm timing where relevant, maintenance records and the shop’s explanation of the affected parts and suspected cause. A wet floor does not by itself prove when or why water entered, and a repair estimate does not decide coverage.

Separate the estimate, deductible and payment

For an assumed approved $8,000 repair and $1,000 applicable deductible, the initial arithmetic is $7,000 before any depreciation, limits or other policy adjustments. If $2,000 of the estimate is excluded, that is a separate coverage issue; do not treat the whole difference as another deductible.

If coverage or valuation is disputed

The NAIC post-disaster claims guide advises requesting a written denial when a claim is rejected. Ask for the policy provisions relied upon and supply relevant missing evidence. Keep a dated copy of each response.

For a valuation dispute, compare the insurer’s vehicle details, equipment and condition assumptions with the actual RV and relevant comparable units. Check the policy’s review or appraisal provisions and contact the responsible state insurance department for complaint options. Do not apply a health-insurance appeal deadline to an RV property claim.

For theft, retain the police report and an itemized list of missing property. For fire or unsafe electrical, propane or structural conditions, use qualified assistance before re-entry or operation. Discuss permanent repair authorization with the insurer; document safe temporary measures and their cost.
