RV service contracts: coverage and repair claims
Evaluate an RV service contract by the failures it covers, exclusions, claim steps, deductible and company responsible for payment. Compare its coverage dates with existing warranties. The sales label “extended warranty” does not establish what a particular repair will receive.
A contract’s deductible may apply per repair visit
The Good Sam Extended RV Service Plan July 2025 surplus-lines sample states that the deductible on the evidence of insurance applies to each repair visit. It limits the agreement to failed covered parts from covered breakdowns and requires a signed invoice that can be checked for completed authorized repairs.
For a hypothetical $1,200 approved covered repair and $200 visit deductible, the remaining covered amount would be $1,000 before any other applicable limits. Two approved items during one visit are different from two separate visits under that wording. Your issued agreement controls; do not assume this sample describes another product or state form.
Ask the seller to locate these clauses
| Clause | Decision it affects |
|---|---|
| Covered parts and exclusions | Whether the suspected failure and its cause qualify |
| Labor rate, diagnosis and teardown | Which costs you pay if the claim is limited or declined |
| Repair authorization and facility rules | Whether the intended shop can follow the claim procedure |
| Obligor, administrator and backing | Who decides claims and who owes payment |
| Cancellation and transfer | Available refund, fee and buyer eligibility |
| Coverage dates, mileage and use | Overlap, expiry and full-time-use eligibility |
The FTC distinguishes separately purchased service contracts from included vehicle warranties. Manufacturers, dealers and independent businesses can sell them. The FTC also warns that coverage and repair procedures vary and that an administrator’s failure does not automatically settle which party must fulfill the agreement.
Include the cost of financing the contract
At an assumed fixed 8% annual rate over 180 monthly payments with no fees, financing a $3,000 contract adds about $28.67 monthly and $2,160.52 interest over the full schedule. That is a calculated borrowing example, not a contract quote. Ask for the cash price and financed total separately.
Check the exact covered failure before buying. A roof leak, damaged floor, worn seal or appliance fault can have different treatment depending on cause and wording.
A large brochure list does not replace the issued agreement’s definitions and exclusions. Keep manufacturer warranty terms separate from this optional purchase.
