RV insurance: use, value and policy limits

Compare RV insurance by the actual use of the vehicle, insured equipment, loss-settlement basis, deductibles and liability limits. Tell the insurer whether you travel recreationally, live aboard or rent it out. Coverage follows the issued policy and endorsements, not the RV’s category or a sales label.

A settlement value is different from a loan payoff

Progressive explains actual cash value as replacement value adjusted for depreciation at the loss date. A stated purchase price or outstanding loan does not automatically establish that value. Ask the insurer how its agreed-value, stated-value or replacement provisions work and whether they are available for the unit.

For an assumed covered total loss valued at $40,000 with a $1,000 applicable deductible, the calculated settlement is $39,000 before other adjustments. A $45,000 loan payoff would leave a $6,000 gap. Separate GAP or other coverage has its own terms; do not assume it pays every shortfall.

An endorsement can change an exclusion

Progressive’s RV coverage list describes optional roof protection and total-loss replacement on eligible units, subject to terms. Its awning/roof explanation describes Roof Protection Plus with a $250 deductible, eligibility for vehicles under six years old and continuation until age sixteen.

That example does not mean every RV or policy covers gradual roof damage. The insurer notes availability restrictions, including possible full-time-use limitations. Obtain the actual endorsement and quote.

Motorhomes, trailers and truck campers need separate checks

Ask which liability protection applies while towing and what covers the trailer or truck camper itself when parked, stolen or damaged. Do not assume either automatic inclusion or automatic exclusion under the tow vehicle’s policy.

Confirm lender requirements and jurisdiction rules separately from optional coverage choices. For an existing loss, use the claim documentation guide rather than treating a quote comparison as a coverage decision.
