Molded fiberglass trailer size and load choices
A molded fiberglass body does not settle trailer weight, water-tightness or tow-vehicle compatibility. Compare the exact layout’s loaded weight and tongue demand, then inspect the shell joint, windows, roof penetrations and floor. Scamp, Casita, Escape, Oliver and Bigfoot need their own model-year specifications.
Scamp 13 variants differ substantially
| Variant | Starting dry weight | Starting hitch | GVWR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 1,600 lb | 180 lb | 2,200 lb |
| LITE | 1,250 lb | 150 lb | 2,200 lb |
| X | 1,986 lb | 232 lb | 3,500 lb |
The manufacturer’s Scamp 13 comparison gives these starting figures. Standard and X list 12-gallon fresh tanks. The variants are not interchangeable weight specifications for an older Scamp or an optioned unit.
The Standard’s 2,200 lb GVWR minus 1,600 lb starting dry weight gives a 600 lb arithmetic gap. Twelve gallons of water weigh about 100 lb. That leaves about 500 lb of that starting gap before other additions; it is not a substitute for the actual cargo label or loaded weighing.
Casita: compare the configuration behind the headline
The Spirit page lists a 17-foot overall length, 2,260 lb starting dry weight and 3,500 lb GVWR. It states that options are excluded from starting dry weight. Standard and Deluxe layouts have different accommodations, so confirm the bath, beds and installed equipment in the actual unit.
Aliner folding campers, nuCamp compact trailers and aluminum-bodied Airstreams use different construction approaches. Check each model’s construction instead of using its size as a guide. Tour the intended layout and compare access, bed dimensions and storage with the trip equipment.
Inspect the service route as well as the shell
Ask who authorizes warranty work, where a shell repair would be done and what the written deposit terms say. Obtain actual quotes and delivery dates rather than relying on claims that all fiberglass trailers retain value or have long waiting lists.
A published tongue figure is a starting figure. The loaded trailer, hitch equipment and vehicle occupants must fit the particular tow vehicle’s limits.
