Coachmen Clipper, Spirit and Shasta choices

Coachmen’s Clipper, American Spirit, Northern Spirit and Shasta names cover different trailer configurations and model years. Identify the complete floorplan and year before comparing a seller’s weight claim. A small Clipper bunkhouse and a large Shasta are separate towing decisions, even when both appear in an entry-level search.

The 2026 12BH is 16 feet long; the 2027 17BH is 19 ft 6 in. The 17BH’s published 1,257 lb carrying allowance is not the tow vehicle’s payload. Its manufacturer weight definition includes LP gas in UVW, but excludes fresh water and added accessories.

At the manufacturer’s 8.3 lb per gallon, 40 gallons add 332 lb. Subtracting that water from 1,257 lb leaves 925 lb for other additions within the published trailer allowance. The unit’s actual label and loaded tongue measurement can change the buying decision.

Choose the actual trailer, then the tow vehicle

Clipper’s historical 3K through 6K group names do not establish a particular truck’s capability, and the whole family is not single-axle. American Spirit and Northern Spirit require their own market and model-year sheets; matching plan numbers alone do not establish identical installed equipment.

For used Clipper ROK or Shasta stock, compare the VIN label with the seller’s listing before assuming a current brochure describes it. Ask for the empty-unit label, tire ratings, battery configuration and a loaded weighing. A listing’s unloaded hitch figure does not include every item the owner will add.

A Clipper packing list needs the unit’s equipment basis

Before filling the 17BH’s tank, identify which installed accessories are already counted in its weight label. Loose camping equipment and later additions must not disappear from the calculation merely on a dealer’s description of the trailer as ready to camp.

Confirm the travel position and restraint for the battery, water containers and stored gear. The resulting loading record is more useful to the tow-vehicle comparison than a generic Clipper series label.
