Thetford C402 cassette: filling, emptying and seals

For a Thetford C402/C403 cassette toilet, follow the model’s preparation, emptying and storage instructions and use an approved disposal facility. Do not travel with water in the integrated flush tank where prohibited. A level warning is a prompt to empty, not a promise of a fixed number of days remaining.

The older manual and current listing use slightly different capacities

The older C402C/C402X/C403 L manual states 19 L waste capacity and a red warning with about 2 L remaining. The current US C402C support page lists 5.1 US gal waste and 4 US gal flush capacity. Identify the actual version rather than converting one rounded specification into a new exact rating.

Use the instructions that match the installed toilet
TaskOlder linked manual’s direction
Waste-tank preparationSpecified fluid via emptying spout, then about 2 L water
Tank removalClose the blade; do not force the cassette
EmptyingApproved dump; press vent only with spout downward
TravelDo not carry water in the integrated flush tank

With the manual’s 19 L figure and 2 L preparation water, 17 L remains before any other contents, and its warning at 2 L free capacity leaves about 15 L between those points. This arithmetic is not a usage forecast: flush water, fluids, waste and the actual tank revision change the result.

An owner’s peeling seal did not establish a failed part

In a July 2023 T@B owner post, the original poster describes a 2021 C402C with estimated 20–25 days of use, water beneath the toilet area and a peeling outer seal layer. Later replies discuss a possible protective layer; the thread does not establish the cause or a universal replacement schedule.

Record whether water comes from the flush supply, tank interface or another path. Identify the toilet and cassette serial numbers before ordering a seal. Do not conclude that every under-bench leak requires the same part or remove an unidentified layer based on another owner’s description.

Cleaning and winter protection depend on the actual manual

The older instructions call for compatible plastic cleaner and seal lubricant and warn against harsh household cleaners. They distinguish heated-location winter use from draining for storage. Their warning about automotive-type antifreeze is not a complete winterization procedure for every RV sanitation product.

Do not put automotive coolant into sanitation or drinking-water equipment. Use the current instructions and approved product for the exact installation. A central-water-fed C403 L also requires the appropriate coach water-system procedure; it is not the same flush-tank arrangement as every C402.

Continue with toilet and disposal choices. An authorized service center can resolve a damaged seal or failed flush without guessing compatibility from the cassette’s appearance.
