RV toilets and portable tanks: choose a disposal path
Choose an RV toilet and holding arrangement only after identifying a permitted place to empty it. A gravity toilet, cassette, separating toilet and pumped system store or move waste differently. A portable tote adds transfer capacity; it does not create a legal disposal site.
Start with where the contents can go
| Arrangement | Task to resolve before buying |
|---|---|
| Gravity toilet and fixed black tank | Reach an approved sewer or dump connection |
| Cassette toilet | Carry and empty the removable tank at an accepting facility |
| Separating toilet | Manage liquid and solids through permitted disposal |
| Macerating pump | Use the specified waste hose, head limits and connection |
| Portable tote | Transfer safely and transport within the exact product limits |
Do not assume a campground toilet, storm drain, ground area or rubbish bin accepts your waste. Obtain the destination’s rules. A pump’s advertised ability to lift waste does not establish that every garden hose, fitting or distant drain is appropriate.
A separating toilet does not instantly sanitize waste
The Nature’s Head manual says full-time use does not allow enough time for all solids to compost and that recently added waste can retain fecal bacteria. Its recommendation for further decomposition does not authorize disposal wherever convenient.
The maker’s current FAQ also distinguishes short-term drying from time- and temperature-dependent composting. Do not treat its broad disposal suggestions as permission that overrides the receiving site’s sanitation rules. Keep appropriate hand hygiene and use the product’s handling instructions.
Water makes a large tote heavy before the tank is counted
Camco offers a 36-gallon Rhino tote. Using the USGS 8.33-lb-per-US-gallon water figure, 36 gallons of clean water alone would weigh about 300 lb. Waste density can differ, and the container and accessories add weight.
This is a handling comparison, not a certified waste mass or permission to tow the tank on a road. Read the exact tote’s fill, towing and speed instructions and the campground’s transport rules. A product being wheeled does not mean one person can lift it full.
Fit and service can decide the purchase
Check floor mounting, clearances, seals, water and electrical requirements before replacing an existing toilet. A macerator has its own power and service needs; a separating unit can require ventilation and a continuously powered fan. Neither guarantees odor-free operation in every installation.
Use fresh, gray and black water tanks for the complete water system. Keep waste hoses and handling equipment separate from drinking-water supplies, and leave a leaking or damaged system out of service until repaired.
