RV internet and TV: coverage, power and hardware
Choose RV internet by tested coverage at the intended site, the subscription’s actual terms and available power. Cellular, satellite and campground Wi-Fi can each work or fail under different conditions. Television reception is a separate antenna or streaming question; no single connection guarantees service everywhere.
A satellite model has its own power requirement
The Starlink Mini specification sheet lists average consumption of 25–40 W, a 12–48 V input rated at 60 W and a minimum 100 W USB-C PD source for its specified USB-C accessory. The USB-C supply rating is not the same as average daily consumption.
| Assumed operation | At 25 W | At 40 W |
|---|---|---|
| 8 hours | 200 Wh | 320 Wh |
| 24 hours | 600 Wh | 960 Wh |
The difference between 8 and 24 hours matters more than calling the dish a small load. Use the actual hardware, approved supply and measured consumption. Confirm obstruction, mounting, service-location and in-motion conditions for the specific subscription before relying on it.
A booster is not another internet connection
A cellular booster amplifies a received cellular signal; it does not provide a new carrier’s service or bypass congestion and subscription limits. Zero displayed bars alone is not a precise signal measurement. Compare actual performance and approved antenna arrangements before buying equipment.
FCC’s consumer-booster order discusses provider consent and registration before operation. Use an authorized compatible device and the current provider registration instructions. An additional SIM does not guarantee independence if both plans depend on the same underlying network.
Test campground Wi-Fi instead of assuming its quality
Ask about coverage at the actual site, login requirements and usage limits. Test the upload, calls or other tasks you need at busy times. A campground network may be useful, but its performance cannot be inferred from whether Wi-Fi appears in the amenities list.
Separate over-the-air TV from streaming
For local broadcast TV, identify the antenna, correct input and any required amplifier power, then run the television’s channel scan after moving. Streaming instead uses the internet connection and data subscription. Do not apply crank-up instructions to a fixed antenna.
Use Winegard AIR 360 checks for that equipment and battery and solar energy budget for operating hours. Establish a separate emergency-contact plan for places where ordinary connectivity is unavailable.
