RV generator maintenance: choose the matching schedule

Use the generator’s full model and serial range to choose its service, exercise and storage instructions. Calendar limits matter alongside running hours. A generic monthly one-hour run or a universal instruction to drain a carburetor can conflict with the actual equipment’s procedure.

Oil intervals differ from exercise instructions

Honda’s current EU2200i manual schedules the initial oil change at one month or 20 hours, then every six months or 100 hours, whichever comes first. The archived Onan KY schedule uses different oil and exercise requirements. Do not transfer one model’s interval to another merely because both supply an RV.

Assume an applicable Honda received a post-break-in oil change at 140 hours on April 18. Its next 100-hour threshold is 240, but the six-month deadline arrives October 18. If the meter reads 190 that day, the unused 50 hours do not postpone the calendar deadline.

Fuel storage is a complete model-specific procedure

Honda’s fuel guidance for its listed portable generators differentiates storage periods and calls for carburetor drainage for two to twelve months or operation less than monthly, using the owner manual’s procedure. More than one year adds fuel-tank drainage. Stabilizer cannot restore already stale fuel.

Read the complete instructions for fuel handling, cooling, draining, ventilation and return to use. Those instructions do not establish a storage plan for a diesel or permanently installed propane generator. Running a vehicle occasionally does not establish that the generator’s own fuel path has been serviced.

Record observations before declaring a repair

A symptom does not select a replacement part
ObservationUseful record for service
Starts then stopsExact shutdown indication, load and operating conditions
Runs without useful AC outputGenerator indication and the RV supply state
Trips when a load startsAppliance input/start demand and other loads
Fuel or exhaust leakageStop use and obtain qualified repair

Do not bypass a shutdown or repeatedly reset a tripping circuit without its prescribed checks. Use the installed equipment’s exhaust and carbon-monoxide precautions; a portable unit belongs outdoors in the location its instructions require. A storage cover must be removed as required before operation.
