Onan MicroLite 4000 KY: exercise and service limits
Match the full Onan model, specification letter and serial number before using a MicroLite 4000 schedule. The archived KY manual is not an interval chart for every current 4,000-watt Onan. Keep the hour reading and calendar due date together; record the complete generator label.
The KY exercise requirement
Cummins publication 981-0154, July 1997 specifies at least two hours monthly at approximately half rated power when use is infrequent, preferably one continuous session. Its break-in oil change is at 20 hours; normal oil service is at 150 hours and at least annually, with dusty operation requiring 50-hour oil changes.
Assume an applicable unit last had its oil changed at 620 hours. The normal hour threshold becomes 770, while the dusty-condition threshold becomes 670. At 680 hours it has 90 hours left under the normal calculation but is already 10 hours past the dusty threshold; the annual deadline can arrive first.
Plan a load rather than adding appliance labels
Half of a 4,000-watt rating is 2,000 watts. In this assumed example, two measured steady loads of 1,200 and 800 watts total that amount, but the arithmetic alone establishes neither startup capability nor a safe circuit arrangement. Use actual appliance input, starting demand and the generator instructions before connecting loads.
An air conditioner’s cooling BTU rating is not its electrical input in watts. Battery chargers can change demand during a run, so yesterday’s operating combination is not a measured load for today. Use suitable equipment and qualified assistance where measurement would expose live wiring.
Storage and a safe restart are paired procedures
The manual gives a separate procedure for storage beyond 120 days when regular exercise is impractical. Follow its complete preparation and return-to-service instructions together, including removal of anything installed to close an opening during storage. A fuel additive alone is not the complete storage procedure.
Check exhaust condition, unobstructed discharge, fuel leakage and the installed carbon-monoxide protection before operation. Stop and obtain service for an exhaust leak or any risk of exhaust entering the RV. Use the exact manual for oil grade, safe servicing, altitude settings and the remaining scheduled work.
