Supplemental braking: fit, power and breakaway
A supplemental braking system operates the towed car’s brakes; the tow bar does not. Choose compatible equipment, follow its power and setup requirements, and test both service braking and breakaway functions under the installed instructions; resolve a failed brake test before departure.
Pedal fit can override a broad compatibility claim
Blue Ox’s BRK2022 Patriot page lists an all-electric unit weighing 6.2 lb with a breakaway included. It explicitly excludes the Fiat 500 because of its round brake pedal. Check the complete application, installation and operating instructions before purchase.
Its listed size is 8 × 7.5 × 11.5 inches. A nominally wide footwell does not establish that the unit can sit securely, attach correctly or leave the seat and pedal in the required positions. Confirm the physical installation in the actual car.
| Check | Why it remains separate |
|---|---|
| Pedal and footwell | The actuator must fit and remain correctly positioned |
| Power supply | The source must stay available throughout towing |
| Normal braking | Verify setup and response under the maker’s test |
| Breakaway | Verify the switch, attachment, power and specified test |
| Motorhome interface | Use the controller or air-system arrangement specified |
Battery requirements belong to the whole installation
Ford’s 2026 Maverick HEV manual warns that an add-on flat-tow brake can discharge the battery and specifies an external 12-volt source during towing. A portable brake’s own backup feature does not override the vehicle’s power instructions.
For an assumed average accessory draw of two amps over six hours, consumption is 12 amp-hours before other loads. This is a planning calculation, not a published Patriot draw. Measure or obtain the actual installation’s demand and provide the required power arrangement.
Manufacturer instructions and route laws both apply
Check the motorhome manual’s towed-brake requirements and the official rules for every jurisdiction on the route, including any breakaway requirement. Do not substitute a trailer-law summary for the treatment of a flat-towed motor vehicle.
Safety cables, service brakes and breakaway protection perform different jobs. Keep all required equipment and do not infer that a short trip or a light car exempts the setup. Use qualified installation support for permanent brake or air-system modifications.
