Baseplates and tow bars: compatibility and height
Match the baseplate to the exact vehicle and the tow bar to that baseplate’s connections, receiver and rated load. Compatible weight ratings alone do not establish tab-width fit, correct installed height or vehicle approval; retain the specified safety connections and breakaway equipment.
Start with application and connection fit
Blue Ox’s baseplate finder requires vehicle year, make and model and specifically calls for compatible tow-bar tab width. Check all fitment exclusions and installation instructions, including trim, bumper and other equipment.
Do not assume a baseplate needs no cutting, leaves crash behavior unchanged or fits another generation. The exact installation instructions determine the required work. Confirm the car’s towing approval separately.
Vertical difference: a measurable compatibility check
Blue Ox’s installation guidance recommends a level bar and, when deviation is necessary, a receiver no more than three inches above or below the baseplate tabs. The specific bar manual and any adapter’s limits govern the installation.
Assume the receiver connection is 20 inches above level ground and the tabs are 16 inches above it. The four-inch difference exceeds that guidance by one inch. Do not correct it with an arbitrary adapter; confirm approved hardware, clearance and any rating reduction.
A stronger bar cannot raise a weaker receiver’s rating
The same Blue Ox guide lists Avail at 10,000 lb, Ascent at 7,500 lb and Apollo at 15,000 lb. Those product figures do not establish what the motorhome receiver or completed coach may tow.
| Item | Evidence to use |
|---|---|
| Baseplate | Exact application and installation instructions |
| Tow bar | Model capacity and compatible connections |
| Receiver and adapters | Installed ratings and permitted configuration |
| Cables and breakaway | Specified rating, attachment and routing |
| Lights and brakes | Vehicle-specific compatibility and functional test |
Inspect the completed setup before travel and after service. Follow the specific maker’s lock, pin, cable, lubrication and inspection instructions. Do not back an attached flat-towed car or force a binding connection; use the prescribed safe disconnect procedure.
