RV waste tanks: sewer connection, valves and dumping
Empty RV waste tanks only at an approved disposal point using a secure sewer connection and the installed system’s instructions. Identify every tank and valve before operating it. Keep potable-water equipment separate from waste equipment; gray water is wastewater, not clean rinse water.
Connect and identify before opening valves
Keystone’s owner guidance calls for closed termination valves before removing the cap, a connected hose to an approved inlet, black-tank discharge followed by gray-water discharge, and closed valves afterward. It also advises keeping the black termination valve closed between dumps to retain liquid with solids.
Multiple gray tanks can have separate valves. Use the actual owner manual for the installed arrangement, flushing requirements, tank treatment and water recharge. Do not treat two-thirds full as a universal threshold for every tank and system.
Choose the hose for the actual route to the inlet
Camco sells a nominal 15-foot RhinoFLEX kit. A measured 18-foot hose path is three feet longer than that nominal hose length. Check actual reach, fittings, support and permitted extensions; do not stretch a short hose or improvise an unsecured connection.
| Item | What to verify |
|---|---|
| RV outlet | Correct valve identification, cap condition and connection |
| Hose and fittings | Compatible, intact and securely seated |
| Disposal inlet | Approved use, secure connection and no observed backup |
| Hose route | Supported drainage without damaging strain or obstruction |
| Tank flush | Separate connection and the exact manual’s valve instructions |
Stop on an abnormal discharge
A non-draining tank, leak or full indication after dumping can have several causes. Do not diagnose a blockage or fouled sensor from the monitor alone. Close the relevant valve if safe and arrange the appropriate inspection rather than adding pressure or forcing objects into plumbing.
Wear suitable protection, follow the dump station’s hygiene rules and wash hands after handling equipment. Do not use the drinking-water hose for waste rinsing. Dispose of waste through an approved inlet; a storm drain or apparently empty ground is not a substitute.
Before travel, follow the manual’s cap and valve checks and include retained water in the loaded-weight calculation. Keep troubleshooting separate from routine dumping when flow or fittings behave abnormally.
