RV VIN, coach serial and ownership documents

Match the RV’s vehicle identification number to its ownership documents and record any separate coach serial number. A coach serial is not automatically a second VIN that can be entered into the federal VIN lookup. Verify title, registration, lien and transfer requirements for the particular vehicle and jurisdiction.

Use the identifier the lookup requests

Thor Motor Coach’s service FAQ requests the last eight VIN digits or its unit serial number for customer service. NHTSA’s recall lookup uses the vehicle VIN. A manufacturer may use another identifier to find the coach build record.

Do not assume a chassis-VIN search categorically excludes every coach recall. NHTSA lists limits to the VIN search, including some recent campaigns, older campaigns and small manufacturers. Ask the coach and chassis makers to confirm the applicable campaigns and repair status where the result is incomplete.

A separate title is not the only ownership document

New York DMV’s trailer guidance lists titles for trailers over 999 lb and model year 1973 or newer. It describes transferable registration for lighter or older trailers. Confirm the applicable weight definition and documents with DMV before buying.

An assumed 2020 trailer documented at 1,500 lb falls on a different side of that published weight test from a 750 lb trailer. That example does not resolve another state’s requirements or authorize an undocumented sale. Registration and title are different questions.

History, recalls and condition remain separate checks

NMVTIS describes title and related history indicators, not a complete repair or recall record. Confirm whether the particular RV is covered by the service. A clean report does not establish its physical condition or replace an inspection.

Use registration and import guidance for the next paperwork steps. Resolve a missing or inconsistent identifier through the seller, lender and title authority before relying on a listing description.
