Renting out an RV: fees, coverage and net income
Before renting out your RV, confirm permission and coverage for rental use and calculate proceeds after fees and operating costs. Gross booking revenue is not profit. Check the platform agreement, your own policy, lender terms, warranty and applicable local or campground rules.
A platform fee can apply to more than nightly rent
Outdoorsy’s host-fee explanation lists a 20–25% service-fee range, with new hosts starting at 25%. Its subtotal includes nightly rent and host-added fees such as cleaning or delivery. It also lists nightly minimum host fees of $15 for drivables and $10 for towables.
For an assumed booking subtotal of $1,000 at 25%, the platform fee is $250 and proceeds are $750 before other costs. If cleaning costs $100 and delivery costs $150, $500 remains before maintenance, coverage, tax, financing and your time. The percentage and minimum applied to the actual reservation must be checked.
Interior damage can be a separate coverage question
Outdoorsy’s U.S. guest comprehensive/collision explanation says interior damage is excluded from that policy and points to optional Damage Protection. It also says claims must be reported within 48 hours of the scheduled trip end. Read the issued reservation coverage and current requirements; the platform name does not establish every protection.
Plan the work between bookings
| Task | Record to keep |
|---|---|
| Verify allowed use and coverage | Applicable agreements, endorsements and written confirmations |
| Inspect departure condition | Required photographs, readings and signed forms |
| Explain installed equipment | Operating instructions and assistance contacts |
| Inspect return condition promptly | Damage photographs, forms and any claim notice |
| Calculate the booking result | Revenue, fees, costs and time |
Check delivery access and whether the destination accepts the arrangement. Inspect and maintain the unit according to its equipment and rental requirements; do not assume renters cause a particular rate of wear.
Keep income, expense and personal-use records for tax advice. The correct reporting and deductions depend on the activity and circumstances; a mortgage-interest publication alone does not determine rental profit or reporting. Compare the resulting net income with the additional work and periods when you cannot use the RV yourself.
