Renting an RV before buying: trial and total cost
Rent an RV before buying when a trip can resolve a specific uncertainty about the layout, size or daily tasks. Compare the complete booking cost and permitted use first. A rental tests that vehicle and trip; it does not replace an inspection of the RV you later purchase.
Mileage changes the cost of the trial
Cruise America’s rental FAQ lists U.S. mileage at $0.39 per mile, with estimated mileage charged and adjusted after return. It describes different nightly mileage estimates for local and one-way rentals and reserves the right to change them by rental type.
At the displayed rate, an assumed 500 miles costs $195. If an assumed three-night base booking is $450, those two items total $645 before fuel, taxes, protection, generator use, kits or other charges. These base-price and distance assumptions are not a booking quote.
Choose a trial that answers your buying question
| Question | What to test within rental terms |
|---|---|
| Is this layout usable? | Beds, kitchen traffic, bathroom and luggage |
| Can we manage the daily tasks? | Permitted setup, hookups and waste-handling demonstration |
| Does the size fit our travel? | Legal route, campsite and parking dimensions |
| Does towing work for this combination? | Approved vehicle, ratings, equipment and insurance before travel |
A delivered trailer can test living space but does not test towing it yourself. A different floorplan in the same class may not answer the bed or bathroom question. Confirm the specific unit or the provider’s substitution terms.
Inspect and document the handover
Record existing damage, fuel and operating readings, supplied equipment and any untested feature. Obtain the assistance contact, return deadline, cleaning and tank requirements, coverage details and deductible. Ask about routes, weather, borders and activities excluded by the agreement.
Use a route within your ability and the rental conditions. A tight site or difficult mountain road is not necessary to evaluate ownership. Keep the trial’s findings separate from ongoing storage, insurance and maintenance costs; renting is not guaranteed to be the cheapest option for every situation.
