Keystone trailer lines and tow weights

Keystone’s travel trailers, fifth wheels and toy haulers require different tow-vehicle checks. Compare the actual unit’s loaded ratings and hitch load before choosing a marketing tier. A name such as Montana, Cougar or Carbon identifies a family; the floorplan, model year and vehicle label determine the weight calculation.

Choose the trailer form before the tier

Keystone uses comfort, premium and luxury groupings on its lineup pages. Those labels describe product positioning.

Verify construction, installed options and warranty on the specific unit. Cougar Half-Ton branding does not establish that a particular half-ton truck has sufficient payload.

Montana 3100RL: keep the specification edition intact

The manufacturer’s 3100RL listing examined October 18, 2026 gives 14,930 lb shipping weight, 3,470 lb carrying capacity, a 2,445 lb published hitch figure and 35 ft 11 in length. Adding shipping weight and carrying capacity gives an 18,400 lb gross-weight total for that listing; confirm the certified GVWR on the unit.

Its 77 gallons of fresh water would weigh about 642 lb at 8.34 lb per gallon. Deduct water and other added items using the label’s weight basis. The published hitch figure describes the listed configuration; use a loaded scale measurement for the truck’s payload and rear-axle checks.

An owner’s truck question exposes the missing measurement

A prospective 2022 Montana 377FL buyer described 13,500 lb dry weight and 3,000 lb carrying capacity while asking about a Sierra 2500. Those owner-supplied figures describe a different model. The useful comparison is the proposed truck’s remaining payload after people and hitch equipment against the trailer’s loaded pin demand, followed by the axle and combination limits.

For example, 2,800 lb of truck payload less 400 lb of occupants and 200 lb of hitch equipment leaves 2,200 lb for pin load and other cargo. A 3,000 lb measured pin would exceed that example’s remaining payload by 800 lb, even if its towing rating were higher.
