Sandpiper and Sierra fifth-wheel load checks
Sandpiper and Sierra include fifth wheels and destination trailers, with different coupling and loading checks. Compare the exact model year and unit label rather than counting duplicate badge listings as different designs. For a fifth wheel, the truck has to carry the loaded pin as well as its people, hitch and other cargo.
Four published fifth-wheel examples
| Plan | UVW | Published cargo allowance | Unloaded pin | Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3100RD | 10,869 lb | 3,100 lb | 2,045 lb | 34 ft 9 in |
| 3480RL | 11,509 lb | 3,100 lb | 1,965 lb | 38 ft 6 in |
| 3844QUAD | 14,384 lb | 1,816 lb | 2,595 lb | 44 ft |
| 3990FL | 13,254 lb | 3,191 lb | 2,445 lb | 43 ft 8 in |
The cited Sandpiper and Sierra tables list these figures. They are unloaded examples, not measured travel weights. The 3844QUAD has more living space than the 3100RD but a smaller published cargo allowance.
Budget the truck separately
For an example pickup with 4,000 lb of payload, 600 lb of occupants and cargo plus 250 lb of fifth-wheel hitch equipment leave 3,150 lb for pin load. An assumed measured 3,300 lb pin would exceed that remainder by 150 lb. A brochure pin figure does not resolve that loaded comparison.
Check each truck axle and tire limit as well as total payload. A fifth-wheel pin transfers load through the bed hitch; a travel-trailer weight-distribution hitch is a different connection. For a destination trailer, identify the actual coupler, tongue limit, delivery route and site access before arranging a move.
Use the VIN for the recall decision
Search NHTSA’s VIN lookup and request completed repair records. A campaign naming a related Sandpiper or Sierra does not establish that every model-year trailer is affected. Retain the vehicle’s corrected labels and service paperwork with its model-year documents.
