Forest River Georgetown and FR3 towing checks

Forest River Georgetown and FR3 gas Class A motorhomes need separate coach, axle, combined and hitch checks. A higher Georgetown series or an FR3 Plus badge does not establish usable towing capacity. Start with the travel-ready coach weight and the receiver label on the actual vehicle.

2027 FR3 30DS: keep the ratings distinct

The 2027 FR3 30DS specification gives 22,000 lb GVWR, 26,000 lb GCWR, 8,000 lb front and 15,000 lb rear axle ratings. It lists 31 ft 11 in length and a 228-inch wheelbase. The axle ratings add to more than GVWR without raising the coach’s gross limit.

For an assumed 21,500 lb loaded coach, the combined-rating margin is 4,500 lb. The installed receiver and towing equipment can reduce that allowance. Do not subtract a receiver rating from this margin; compare the applicable limits and use the lowest permitted load.

A dolly has weight too

In a Georgetown owner towing discussion, the proposed truck weighed about 4,900 lb against a reported 5,000 lb hitch rating. A tow dolly’s own weight also has to be counted. Those owner-supplied numbers do not establish the rating of another Georgetown or FR3.

For example, a 4,900 lb vehicle plus an assumed 500 lb dolly totals 5,400 lb before other towed additions. That exceeds a 5,000 lb rating by 400 lb. Check whether the vehicle can be dolly-towed at all, plus braking and tongue-load restrictions.

Inspect the actual layout and chassis

Georgetown 3, 5 and 7 and FR3/FR3 Plus require their own model-year documents. Check bathroom access with slides closed, passenger belt positions, appliance equipment and service records. Get axle weights with the intended water and fuel aboard before relying on storage space or sleeping capacity.

A dolly belongs in the towed-load record

When a Georgetown owner quotes the car’s weight, ask whether that figure includes the equipment used to move it. A dolly, carried gear and other permitted additions can change the combined towed load.

The worked example exceeds its reported receiver limit even though the car alone is below it. The FR3 worksheet also needs the actual loaded coach, not its empty sales weight.

These two checks are separate from whether the proposed car’s manufacturer permits the chosen towing method.
