European motorhome and caravan choices

When comparing European motorhomes and caravans, check the vehicle’s laden-mass limit, installed equipment and local service support. Hymer, Bürstner, Dethleffs, Carado, Sunlight and Eriba names do not establish a common payload or electrical specification. For travel in Europe, verify the rental vehicle and your licence with the rental company before booking.

Hymer B-MC T 580: a tank has two relevant capacities

The Hymer B-Class ModernComfort T 580 specification lists 699 cm length, 229 cm width and 3,500 kg maximum laden mass. It gives 2,979 kg nominal mass in running order with a stated tolerance range of 2,830–3,128 kg. Treat the actual built vehicle’s weight as the starting point for packing.

Its fresh tank holds 180 litres, but the specification gives a 20-litre driving fill. Filling from that driving level to capacity adds about 160 kg of water. That is extra load before passengers, luggage or accessories not included in the stated weight basis.

Inspect equipment as well as dimensions

The cited Hymer sheet lists 230 V, 12 V and USB sockets. A North American plug adapter does not by itself change appliance voltage or frequency. Identify the charger, inverter, protective devices and gas fittings before estimating conversion costs or parts availability.

U.S. import approval is a separate decision

NHTSA’s import guidance explains that a vehicle under 25 years old needs U.S. safety certification or an eligible compliance route for permanent import. EPA requirements apply separately; its older-vehicle provisions include engine-configuration conditions. Obtain vehicle-specific eligibility before shipping or paying a non-refundable deposit.

The running-order tolerance changes the packing decision

On the Hymer example, the difference between the stated lower and upper running-order figures is not luggage space promised to the buyer. Establish the actual completed vehicle’s weight and what its driving-fill basis includes.

Filling the large tank for a campsite stay changes the load while leaving the maximum laden mass unchanged. Before importing or renting, keep the licence and compliance decisions separate from this packing calculation.

A vehicle can fit the campsite and remain unsuitable for the proposed licence, electrical supply or import route.
