Coachmen Cross Trail, Prism and larger Class Cs
Coachmen Cross Trail, Prism, Concord and Entourage do not share one chassis or one towing allowance. Identify the floorplan, completed-coach label and chassis year on the actual unit. A compact AWD coach and a larger diesel Class C can have very different load limits despite similar sleeping capacity.
Cross Trail 20XG: a source-specific example
| Item | Published figure |
|---|---|
| GVWR | 11,000 lb |
| GCWR | 15,000 lb |
| Front / rear axle ratings | 4,630 / 7,275 lb |
| Exterior length | 24 ft 2 in |
| Fresh / gray / black tanks | 30 / 27 / 28 gal |
The 2027 Cross Trail 20XG sheet lists a 156-inch wheelbase. That exact edition matters: a plan name alone is insufficient to carry a dimension or tank figure from an older listing into a purchase decision.
If the travel-ready coach weighs an assumed 10,500 lb, subtracting from 15,000 lb GCWR leaves 4,500 lb combined-weight margin. That arithmetic does not override the receiver, chassis or towing-equipment limits. At 11,000 lb coach weight the margin falls to 4,000 lb.
A larger body needs a different inspection
For Cross Trail or Prism on a van chassis, test the cab-to-living-area access and the bathroom with the intended occupants. For Concord or Entourage, check site length, height clearance and chassis service access. Do not treat a family name or an AWD badge as a substitute for those measurements.
The motorized owner manual requires the loaded coach and towed vehicle to remain within GCWR and hitch limits. Carrying 30 gallons of fresh water adds about 249 lb at 8.3 lb per gallon; include that water in the loaded weighing. Obtain separate axle totals because staying below GVWR does not establish compliance with each axle rating.
Keep the compact coach’s load condition explicit
In the Cross Trail example, the additional loaded coach weight reduces the combination margin rather than increasing the receiver’s capacity. Record fuel, fresh water, occupants and fitted accessories at weighing.
An empty dealer demonstration and a departure-day load are different conditions. For a Prism, Concord or Entourage comparison, obtain the completed-coach and receiver information before deciding that a similar bed arrangement will carry the same travel equipment.
Floorplan usability and chassis suitability answer related but separate purchase questions.
For the compact Cross Trail, make the measurement record usable at handover. Record the highest installed roof equipment, the exterior width and the travel-ready axle results beside the exact chassis and model year.
A campsite length search and a towing calculation use different parts of that record. Ask the seller to show access to the service points with the coach in its normal parked configuration, then check the cab, bathroom and bed access in travel position.
For a Prism, Concord or Entourage, repeat the inspection on that candidate rather than accept a demonstration of another family as evidence that the same equipment or clearances are present.
