RV roof vent fan will not run, open or close
For an RV roof vent fan fault, record whether the blade, lid or both fail to move. Identify the fan and control version before forcing a knob or changing a sensor setting. A thermostat, closed-lid circulation mode or rain response can change behavior without identifying a failed motor.
Compare blade, lid and control response
| Observation | What to establish |
|---|---|
| No blade or lid response | Fan model, documented control setting and accessible power indication |
| Blade runs, lid stays still | Manual versus powered lid and any locked knob |
| Lid moves, blade stays still | Selected mode, speed and fault indication |
| Starts without a fresh button press | Thermostat/automatic mode and actual model features |
| Water enters at the ceiling | Lid, flange, roof and operating conditions |
A nearby working light does not prove the fan shares its circuit or has power at its controller. Use the RV wiring information and labelled protection. Do not jump a fuse or probe an exposed powered board to find out.
A verified Deluxe example differs from a generic lid rule
The 2017 MaxxFan Deluxe guide describes closed-lid Ceiling Fan operation for the covered models. A closed lid therefore does not prove this fan must stop. Its manual also distinguishes locking manual knobs from remote-control versions.
Maxxair’s current FAQ distinguishes model features, including that intake/exhaust reversal is not available on every model. A rain cover, rain sensor and powered lid are separate features. Match the label before interpreting another owner’s control sequence.
Supply capacity is not steady power consumption
The cited Deluxe manual calls for a 12-volt DC, 5-amp service. That is a supply requirement for those models, not proof of constant 5-amp consumption at every speed. Use actual operating data for battery budgeting.
Keep fingers away from the blade and isolate the equipment as instructed before cleaning. Do not remove blade hardware or lubricate a powered-lid gear by guesswork. A damaged blade, hinge or crank arm needs the correct replacement and procedure.
Travel and rain instructions belong to the installed vent
Follow the exact lid and cover instructions for driving and weather exposure. A generic “all power lids must close” rule can conflict with equipment designed for a different operating mode. Do not treat a sensor as guaranteed protection against all rain.
If water enters around the flange, identify roof and plastic compatibility before resealing. Use roof-leak assessment when the source is uncertain. Record the model and fault indication before purchasing a new fan.
