Which truck class fits an RV? Compare actual builds

Choose a truck from the intended loaded trailer and the exact truck’s ratings, equipment and dimensions. Half-ton, three-quarter-ton and one-ton names are shopping categories, not the payload figure of an individual build. Diesel, payload maximum and highest towing rating are separate attributes.

Even one engine change can reverse the comparison

Ford’s 2026 F-150 guide lists available maxima of 8400 lb towing and 1775 lb payload for 2.7 L EcoBoost, and 13500 lb towing and 2440 lb payload for 3.5 L EcoBoost. It warns that maxima need not be achieved simultaneously and that configuration and equipment matter.

Ram 15003.6 L Pentastar8130 lb2360 lb

Ram’s 2026 capability page supplies the two Ram rows. The 3.6 L’s listed maximum payload is 430 lb higher than the standard 3.0 L Hurricane figure, while its maximum towing figure is 3480 lb lower. Neither difference identifies a particular truck’s door-label capacity.

Translate the trailer into carried load

Assume a 14000-lb fifth wheel with a measured 2800-lb loaded pin, plus 350 lb occupants, 200 lb hitch and 300 lb truck cargo. The combined carried load is 3650 lb. That already exceeds every half-ton engine-level payload maximum in the four rows, without assuming a particular heavy-duty truck will fit.

A heavier-duty candidate still needs its actual payload, axle, tire, GCWR and trailer limits checked. Do not choose one from a line-wide 8000-lb payload headline or combine a gas truck’s payload maximum with a diesel truck’s tow maximum.

Single and dual rear wheels change more than a badge

Compare the actual rear axle allowance, tire capacity, width, bed and approved hitch installation. A dually is not universally required at one pin-weight threshold, and a single-rear-wheel truck is not universally adequate below it. Confirm access and parking dimensions for the places you use.

Likewise, a diesel’s additional mass and equipment must be assessed in the actual build. Fuel cost, purchase price, service and grade performance need documented figures for the candidates rather than an all-loads diesel recommendation.

Check the build before a purchase agreement

Obtain the vehicle placard, certification label and correct towing chart for the engine, axle, body and packages. Record added caps, toolboxes, passengers and hitch hardware. Use RV tow and payload calculation and hitch-clearance checks before deciding which truck class to buy.
