RV body and hail damage: assess before repairing

Assess water entry and structural damage before treating an RV crack or hail dent as cosmetic. Photograph the damage, prevent further exposure safely and obtain a repair scope matched to the panel construction. Suspected frame, hitch or suspension damage needs a structural assessment before travel.

A surface crack does not define the depth of damage

WEST SYSTEM’s fiberglass repair manual separates laminate, core and delamination repairs and starts core-related assessment with the extent of separation and the core’s condition. Its marine repair procedures explain material behavior; they do not authorize drilling or injecting any RV wall without the RV construction and adhesive requirements.

A molded fiberglass cap, a laminated wall and aluminum siding need different repair plans. Ask what layers are damaged, whether moisture remains, which bonds and attachments carry load and what caused the crack. Filling the visible line without resolving movement or damaged backing can leave the original problem.

Estimate the affected layers, not just the visible rectangle

In this assumed example, a 2-foot by 3-foot area covers 6 square feet. If assessment finds two separate damaged bond interfaces across that area, their combined interface area is 12 square feet. That arithmetic does not specify an adhesive quantity or authorize injection: material, voids, access and the repair design determine the actual work.

Have the estimate distinguish finish restoration, laminate repair, core replacement, bonding, trim removal and sealing. Compare estimates with the same scope; a lower price that omits drying or a damaged layer is a different job. Request the product compatibility and cure requirements before accepting a proposed patch.

Use ground-level photos or qualified inspection where roof access is uncertain. A dent without a leak and a torn seam letting water into a wall call for different work. Ask the insurer which documentation and temporary protection it requires before a permanent repair changes the evidence.

Structural work needs the actual frame requirements

A welding qualification alone does not identify the RV manufacturer’s repair design, material or alignment limits. Obtain manufacturer or competent structural repair guidance for cracked or bent members. Do not grind, drill, weld or cover a suspected load-bearing fault merely to improve its appearance.

Inspect behind a damaged underbelly before closing it: moisture, wiring, plumbing and supports may also need repair. The finished scope should include restored attachments, compatible sealing and checks for the original leak or movement, rather than treating a new outer panel as proof that everything behind it is sound.
