RV spring startup: flushing, sanitizing and testing
Spring startup requires the actual plumbing and appliance procedures: remove winterizing products, restore the correct valve arrangement, check for leaks and sanitize as specified. Keep the water heater off until its required fill and startup conditions are met. Clear-looking water alone does not establish potable-water safety.
Do not reset every bypass before flushing
The 2022 Jay Flight Bungalow manual’s plumbing section keeps the heater off and bypassed during its sanitizing and rinsing procedure. It removes or bypasses the specified cartridge filter, then restores the heater arrangement at the prescribed stage. That is different from a universal instruction to put every valve in normal mode at the beginning.
Identify whether the installed heater is storage or tankless and follow its own instructions. A washing machine, ice maker, outside shower or other accessory can add a separate flushing or restoration step.
A contact period needs its own place in the day
For its stated 50-ppm sanitizing procedure, that Jayco manual specifies at least four hours of contact in the tank and lines before draining and rinsing. An assumed 9 a.m. completed fill/contact start means 1 p.m. is the earliest end of that four-hour period, before the remaining rinse and restoration work.
Use the actual manual’s compatible product, dilution, contact period and disposal directions. Household bleach strengths differ, and a general recipe should not override a component’s restrictions. Never mix sanitizers with other cleaning chemicals.
| Area | Check before travel |
|---|---|
| Water | Correct drains/valves, leak check and complete restoration |
| Batteries | Model-specific charging, inspection and required water level |
| Propane appliances | Required inspection and safe startup; stop for gas odor or faults |
| Tires and running gear | Cold pressure, condition, coupling and scheduled service |
| Detectors and extinguisher | Specified tests, inspection and replacement dates |
| Slides and awning | Clear operating space, condition and required travel securing |
Test while a service alternative is available
Check the restored equipment before departure and record abnormal behavior. Pump cycling with outlets shut can have several causes, including an external leak or an internal check-valve issue; it is not a diagnosis by itself.
Use the installed appliance instructions for test duration and conditions. An arbitrary one-hour flush or one-day appliance run does not establish a universal completion standard. Correct unresolved faults before relying on the equipment during the trip.
