Parking an RV at home: rules and space

Before parking an RV at home, check the property’s private restrictions and the relevant public parking and zoning rules. Street parking, a driveway, a new pad and living in the RV can require different answers. Measure the actual access and usable space separately from legal permission.

San Diego’s street permit is a specific example

The City of San Diego permit page describes restrictions on RV street parking from 2–6 a.m. and within 50 feet of an intersection. Eligible residents can obtain temporary overnight permits for their block. It lists $1.50 per 24-hour permit and a maximum 72 permits per address annually.

Six permits at that stated rate total $9. They do not provide year-round storage or permission to occupy a driveway, change a yard or live in the vehicle. Confirm current eligibility, duration and all remaining restrictions with the city.

Bring the actual proposal to the right authority

Different parking questions
ProposalDocuments or office to check

Sleep or live in the parked RVApplicable occupancy/zoning provisions and private restrictions

Give the location, RV dimensions and proposed duration. Request a written answer tied to the rule being applied. Do not treat a neighbor’s parking arrangement as proof that yours is permitted.

Measure the doorway, turn and parked envelope

Include roof equipment, mirrors, rear carriers, slides where relevant and access needed to connect or move the vehicle. A nominal garage size does not establish its clear opening or maneuvering space. If the RV does not fit, screening cannot solve the dimension problem.

Keep a priced storage alternative. For example, RecNation’s Ruskin listing advertises uncovered spaces at specific sizes and starting rates; obtain an actual quote and verify access and availability. Respond to any notice using its stated procedure and deadlines rather than assuming a nationwide HOA enforcement rule.
